Maya Avellar was a Paladin of the Republic of the Sphere.

History

Early Life

Maya was the niece of Mitchell Avellar, then President of the Outworlds Alliance. Due to Mitchell's childless status, Maya was for most of her youth considered his heir apparent. Maya was a strong believer in the ideology set out by Julius Santiago Avellar, something her uncle's Long Road program had only reinforced in her.[1]

Maya was distressed by and opposed to Mitchell's decision to start binding the Alliance to Clan Snow Raven. She argued respectfully, but publicly, that the Raven Alliance was impossible to reconcile with the ideals of both peoples, and that either side sacrificing their fundamental beliefs was a mistake. Her opposition had no impact on the unification process, and when she realized this Maya announced that she would go into exile rather than participate in what the Alliance was becoming. Maya offered to return to the Alliance when and if the people decided to return to Julius Santiago Avellar's vision.[1]

After her departure, Maya disappeared from the public eye. Rumors spread that she had ventured into the Deep Periphery to found her own utopia or remained in the Alliance in secret, but in 3076 the Alliance's government seemed to believe she was in Lyran Commonwealth space.[1]

Service to the Republic

At some point following her self-exile Maya immigrated to the Republic of the Sphere and enlisted in the Republic Armed Forces. By the outbreak of the Capellan Crusades Maya had risen to the rank of Knight. She was attached to Stone's Revenants during the war, which saw her promotion to Paladin.[2] In 3110, Maya and Geoffrey Mallowes visited Jonah Levin as he was recovering from his wounds to inform him of his Knighthood. Her framing his promotion as an opportunity to help his unit rather than as a personal advancement won her Levin's respect and was key to his accepting of the responsibility.[3]

In November 3134, as Damien Redburn's term as Exarch was nearing it's end, Maya traveled to Terra to participate in the election of his replacement. Due to her strong belief in maintaining the Republic's peaceful ideals she aligned herself against the supporters of David McKinnon and the Founders Movement. Avellar wanted to stop the erosion of the Republic's borders, but she feared that escalating the war with Clan Jade Falcon would only increase the strength of future Clan assaults. Her insistence on finding non-military solutions led to a public argument with fellow Paladin Kaffyd Op Owens.[4] During the first round of voting in the election, Maya received a single vote from longtime friend and ally Jonah Levin. [5] Jonah continued voting for Maya for the subsequent rounds until she figured out who was doing it and urged Levin to vote for McKinnon instead. Avellar was by that point more concerned with thwarting the election of Kelson Sorenson.[6]

Republic Civil War

After Levin's election, Maya joined Paladins Heather GioAvanti and Gareth Sinclair in attempting to unravel a conspiracy in the Republic Senate to seize control of the Republic. Maya put extralegal pressure on one of the members of the conspiracy identified in hopes that they would agree to tell the Exarch what they knew.[7] As the Republic spiraled in to Civil War, Maya and the other Paladins helped Levin assess the situation and formulate the Republic's response.[8] Maya was one of several Paladins who served as the honor guard at Victor Steiner-Davion's funeral.[9]

During the struggle for Terra, Maya fought against the Senate Alliance. Initially Maya was unable to reach her unit, which caused the center of the Republic loyalist line to buckle.[10] Eventually though her Vulture met up with Julian Davion's troops at river Marne.[11] Maya held a bridge alone against Conner Rhys-Monroe's forces, and managed to single-handedly stall his advance. Maya's mech was down twice but she managed to bring it back to it's feet each time. Maya held the line long enough for the First Davion Guards to flank Rhys-Monroe and force Senate forces into retreat.[12]
