Leonard Kobayashi was the commanding officer of the Sixteenth Galedon Regulars during the War of 3039.[1]

History

On 9 August 3039, Tai-sa Kobayashi and the Sixteenth Galedon Regulars landed on Thestria in order to liberate the planet from the Dioscuri's Castor Regiment. Kobayashi was a diehard supporter of Coordinator Takashi Kurita and a staunch opponent to Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita's military reforms, which caused the Sixteenth Galedon to take heavy casualties in a series of stubborn, direct assaults. Most of this was due to Kobayashi's desire to remove the mercenaries from the world before the First Proserpina Hussars could arrive and finish the job and, when it became apparent that the Sixteenth Regulars could not accomplish this task, Kobayashi exhorted his soldiers to deal as much damage as they could regardless of their own safety. When the First Hussars arrived and began making a cautious assault against the planetary capital, Kobayashi's forces charged headlong into the fight, causing a large amount of collateral damage to the capital's infrastructure.[1]

Matters became even more complicated when Kobayashi refused to submit to Henry Sobiroff—commander of the First Hussars and advocate for Kanrei Kurita's reforms—as commander of the Thestria task force. This ongoing argument prevented either unit from coordinating their actions and gave the battered mercenaries space to maneuver and minimize their own losses. When the mercenaries were finally caught between the Hussars and Regulars, Sobiroff offered to allow them to leave the world in peace if they ceased fighting. This move enraged Kobayashi, with the Regulars' commander ordering his final active battalion to suicidally charge the retreating Castor Regiment in the hopes that it would force Sobiroff to join the battle. Instead, Sobiroff's Hussars watched as the Dioscuri destroyed the last of the Sixteenth before looting some of the Regulars' equipment and gifting the mercenaries the rest.[1]

When the Dioscuri left Thestria on 1 September, Kobayashi and a number of his surviving senior officers committed seppuku in order to atone for their loss against "Davion mercenary scum."[1]
