Battery (Formation)

Description

Battery formations are unique artillery units that typically field between four to six artillery pieces by the armies of the Inner Sphere.^[1] This formation designation is not uniformly used across Inner Sphere militaries which frequently designate artillery formations of the same size as Companies.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

Battery Organizational Variations

Free Worlds League Military

The FWLM organizes Field Artillery and air-defense units into batteries as either semi-independent units or attached at the battalion or regimental level.^[6]

FWLM air-defense units consist of 8-12 anti-air platforms, deployed at the Battalion level.

Mobile Long Tom Artillery Organization

The Battery is specifically noted as an organizational scheme used for regimental-level Mobile Long Tom Artillery detachments or as the core of independent artillery battalions consisting of six units.^[1]

Notes

By the Early Spaceflight Era, the term battery referred to any company-sized echelon unit part of a military's artillery branch, fielding a variety of artillery weapons systems included towed field guns, self-propelled guns, rocket, surface-to-surface missile artillery, fixed pieces, as well as anti-aircraft guns, mortars, and supporting radar and fire direction equipment.
