Zahira Esteban was the commanding officer of the Hombres Locos battle armor platoon of the Free Worlds League Military during the Dark Age Era.[1]
History
One week prior to the Fourth Battle of Tamarind in December 3142, Duke Fontaine Marik assembled an all-volunteer platoon of infantry to infiltrate the occupied capital city of Zanzibar. Captain Esteban's Hombres Locos—named for a street gang on Gibraltar—successfully penetrated the city's borders and located a critical command post belonging to the Eleventh Lyran Guards with assistance from local guerrilla fighters. Just before the rest of Duke Marik's forces began their assault, Esteban's prepositioned soldiers took the guard post's defenders entirely by surprise, eliminating all armed resistance alongside an infantry regiment's entire command staff. The Hombres engaged with additional conventional troops while providing TAG spotting data for the Tamarind attackers' artillery but were confronted by Lyran BattleMechs during their attempt to exfiltrate from the city. Having been given enough advanced warning to prepare an ambush for the enemy 'Mechs, Esteban and her command squad swarmed over their pursuers and caused enough damage to enable the remainder of her platoon to escape.[2][3]
Esteban lost one of her arms while downing a Lyran Zeus and was captured by the enemy forces. While she was ultimately released from captivity, she was required to implant an advanced bionic prosthetic in order to remain capable of serving in a combat role. Although this made her the recipient of the Free Worlds League's zealous anti-bionic ideology, Duke Marik supported Esteban's decision as part of a larger effort to encourage acceptance for League soldiers who chose to return to duty following severe injury.[1]
