Totem BattleMech (Clan)
Definition
Totem BattleMechs are designed as an avatar of a Clan's totem animal;[1] in a wider sense, other factions have arguably adopted the concept to a degree.
More common among the Clans, particularly after Operation REVIVAL and in the later days of the Dark Age, these BattleMech designs typically devote more resources to aesthetic "frills". These "frills" are often anthropomorphic or zoomorphic in appearance.
One example of the increased importance of the Totem 'Mech can be seen when these units are compared to the OmniMechs that regularly appeared in the Clan's front line Clusters. Those units, designed for brutal efficiency on the battlefield and quick production, lack all the special moldings, formed armor, and other design details used in the Totem 'Mechs.[1]
Many 'Mechs are named after their Clan, such as the Nova Cat. However, this does not make the 'Mech a "Totem 'Mech". To be considered as such a 'Mech is designed to visually resemble some part of the faction fielding them, such as the Eyrie, Mandrill, Kodiak, and Fire Scorpion.

2026 Update (Resurgence Era/Fan Update)
Prior to the editing of this list in January 2026 there were only nine Clan Totem mechs represented:
- Balius
- Eyrie
- Gyrfalcon
- Jade Phoenix
- Shrike
- Fire Scorpion
- Mandrill
- Howler
- Kodiak
As of January 2026 the list has been expanded to represent the mechs that are unique to certain Clans. By definition, "A social group having a common affiliation to such an object." For comparison, the Howler is considered a Totem mech but doesn't resemble a Mandrill in appearance with reverse knee joints. It also does not mirror the ferocity of the Clan with a Prime loadout of three LRM5's.
In addition to expanding the list to include various unique mechs to Clans a page will be added for Inner Sphere faction Totem mechs.

Notes
- The Thunder Stallion was originally planned as a totem ’Mech but the totem aspect was deemphasized in favor of more combat capability.[2]
- With new parameters in place for this page, the mech has been added as a Totem mech to the list above. The "4[3]" variant brought new life to this chassis, where it can finally be on the front lines, rather than the support mech it originally became.
