The Unopened Work
| “ | In our hearts beats the soul of the Smoke Jaguars. But we cannot reveal this to the universe - not yet. Someday, yes we will take our rightful place in the stars and our former brethren. That time is generations away, our Hidden Destiny. We must be something else, something that is neither Clan nor Inner Sphere. We must slowly work our way back into civilized space, but never reveal who we are until the time is right, until the time of the ilClan. This is our burden, our cause. | ” |
- Excerpt from Trent[1]
The Unopened Work is referred to a variety of notes that were created by Trent that detailed the future of the Smoke Jaguar remnants. After his death, Paul Moon would use these notes as the cornerstone of the Fidelis.[2]
While an IlClan has declared itself as such, the ilClan's purpose is to unite all the Clans and bring the Great Houses within a new Star League. Alaric Ward has not done such an act. At best, he tricked Clan Jade Falcon into running into a fight halfcocked to split Terra's defenders, whom he could not defeat on his own. This is on top of convincing the former Custos to abandon the Republic of the Sphere in their time of need with the reward of restoring Clan Smoke Jaguar. After he took control of Terra, he then rejected the Rasalhague Dominion's bid to join the ilClan and Star League. This resulted in an Inner Sphere noble attempting to assassinate the Galaxy Commander of Clan Ghost Bear's Alpha Galaxy, Lars Magnusson. After which, the entire galaxy vanished, leaving the Rasalhague Dominion fighting itself once more as the Joiners are hunted down by the Dominion for such treachery.
None of these acts have been perceived as honorable or befitting an IlKhan or First Lord. As seen by the Fidelis, while Paul Moon was a dedicated Custos, in his old age, he made several poor judgment calls. The Smoke Jaguar name may serve the Wolf Khan but the Clan Smoke Jaguar soul awaits the day of reawakening.
