Talk:Achernar

From BattleIntelligence

Proper name

No Catalyst sources appear to use the name Alpha Eridani for Achernar. Even Wikipedia simply refers to it by the common name Achernar, not its Bayer designation. Why use it here?

Not sure. After initial checks I presume the article will be moved back to Achernar, but before doing that I'd like to check a few more sources and right now I don't have the time for that. Frabby (talk) 14:35, 22 June 2024 (EDT)
It's Alpha Eridani on the Domionions Divided poster map, so referred to by that name at least in this one canon instance. But I agree it needs to be moved back to Achernar. Frabby (talk) 01:44, 24 June 2024 (EDT)
We should at least use the name Alpha Eridani for the actual name of the star, though, right? MG (talk) 06:15, 3 September 2024 (EDT)
The system is usually named after the star. But that's the problem: Achernar is the real star's name. "Alpha Eridani" just means it's the brightest star (from earth) in the Eridani constellation - this is not really a name. While BattleTech astrography is weird in what names are considered proper names (like annoyingly referring to planets by their sun's name if real-world suns, or otherwise naming the sun or system after its most important inhabited body for fictional systems), this case seems pretty clear to me. Achernar is also called Alpha Eridani but that's not its proper name. Frabby (talk) 06:22, 3 September 2024 (EDT)
Such are the woes of documenting fictional data. I guess it's to be left alone for now, and in the unlikely event that Achernar is revisited in a sourcebook or otherise, we can hopefully find out some more information about the system. MG (talk) 06:45, 3 September 2024 (EDT)
