Character History
Leon Garcia was born on Shiro III, the elder of two sons of Alfredo Garcia, who was the CEO and a co-owner of Grumman Amalgamated.[1]
Circumstancial evidence suggests he was born at the end of the thirtieth century, no sooner than 2990 and no later than 3008: He is 22 years old[1] at the beginning of the Bruderkampf scenarios, which are undated but appear to be set in the timeframe after Shiro III became a Free Worlds League holding and part of the Duchy of Andurien sometime after 3012 and before the Andurien Secession of 3030, and also implicitly before the Concord of Kapteyn which was agreed upon in 3022 and finalized in 3024. (The entire scenario tentatively gives the impression of being set in 3025, which would suggest Leon to have been born ca. 3003.)
Concluding their MechWarrior training, both Leon and his younger brother Hernando Garcia had to fight their academy trainer with live weapons, with no physical attacks allowed. To graduate, they needed to bring him down in a limited amount of time. During the fight Leon's Trebuchet had its armor penetrated and its reactor shielding breached. To save his brother, Hernando rammed the trainer thereby saving Leon but disqualifying Hernando. This caused a rift between the brothers.[2]
As the first-born, Leon received preferential treatment from their father and joined the prestigious Fifth Defenders of Andurien while Hernando, who was unloved by their father had to work harder to prove his worth, joined the Steel Brothers mercenary unit.[1]
Independent of each other, the Garcia brothers were sent out to retrieve the intact communication module (possibly referring to a Collapsible Command Module) of an enemy Cyclops following the destruction of a Capellan Confederation command lance in recent fierce battles for Shiro III. In this night mission, which was complicated by mines and artillery, Hernando prevailed and secured the module for his mercenary unit. Leon considered this another shameful defeat after pirates had earlier managed to steal supplies from his unit. The mercenaries, including Hernando, were subsequently (possibly unjustly) accused by the Andurien forces of stealing salvage, terminated their contract and fled towards the Magistracy of Canopus.[3]
The fleeing mercenaries were brought to battle on Cursa by Leon's pursuing unit, where the extreme environmental conditions (sandstorm, earthquake, magma flows) gradually got worse and soon separated the warring parties, forcing the dueling brothers to end their battle with the mercenaries escaping to another planet.[4]
Leon caught up with his brother's unit again on an unnamed planet near the Magistracy. The three surviving 'Mechs from each side faced off again when in the middle of the battle, six Capellan 'Mechs from the 1st Confederation Reserve Cavalry who had followed them from Shiro III made a combat-drop onto the battlefield to vanquish the battling Marik and mercenary forces. When a Capellan Cyclops moved to kill Leon, Hernando charged the heavier 'Mech in a maneuver reminiscent of the one he had used back at the academy exam. This time, he saved his brother's life and also rallied the Marik and mercenary units for a joint narrow victory against the Liao attackers, with a single 'Mech left standing. Reunited, the brothers made peace and their units left on two Leopard DropShips.[5]
