As of 3026 Kincaid Defiance Industries (KDI) was a minor Lyran arms and technology manufacturer with an inconspicuous profile, shipping capacity and established trade routes into the Federated Suns.[1] They were situated on the North Whitman continent of Hesperus II.
Overview
This firm was selected as a front for a secret manufacturing deal: Following the sacking of the Friden Aerospace Park facility on Hoff at the hands of the Black Widow Company, the Federated Suns lacked the industrial base to manufacture the prototype Double Heat Sinks which they had created there. They turned to their Lyran Commonwealth allies to produce components which were secretly delivered to the KDI HQ facility on Hesperus II for assembly and delivery to New Avalon.
On 5 March 3028, a trio of Molehunters—counterintelligence operatives of the Lyran Intelligence Corps led by one agent Schröder—made an unannounced visit to CEO Simon Kincaid, informing him and his aide Francesco Roncaletti that a Double Heat Sink assembled at their site had been found installed on an enemy BattleMech. The subsequent investigation revealed that an unknown perpetrator had been diverting a significant share of the prototype Double Heat Sink production to the Capellan Confederation by falsely marking it as production cull and smuggling it off world.
As the investigation was nearing its end and with the Molehunters trying to identify the culprit, Barton's Regiment of the McCarron's Armored Cavalry mercenary unit staged a quick and narrow objective raid against the Kincaid Defiance Industries plant which was successful despite heavy resistance from the Blackhearts and the Twenty-sixth Lyran Guards, combined with relentless aerospace fighter attacks.[2]
As enemy forces marched towards the KDI complex, Kincaid told Francesco Roncaletti, whom he considered his adoptive son after having lost his own family to House Marik forces in an unspecified incident, that he had killed Schröder to prevent him from uncovering that it had been Kincaid himself who had sold the secret technology to the Confederation. Kincaid made Roncaletti promise that he would destroy all evidence and save the firm, then announced that he was not coming back. However, Kincaid was not killed by the enemy 'Mechs; what he did not tell Roncaletti was that he had arranged safe extraction for himself in exchange for the prototype blueprints which he carried with him.[1] Although the entire raid was later explained as a retaliation strike because Kincaid had supposedly defrauded McCarron's Armored Cavalry, the implication is that instead of this somewhat implausible scenario the raid was in fact an extraction raid for Kincaid, which the Lyrans either never learned or which they covered up with the retaliation strike story.
As the facility was still in existence during the Jihad,[3] it is implied that Roncaletti did as he promised, saving the company and becoming its CEO.
