Justin Kovachs was the commanding officer of the Eighth Donegal Guards during the War of 3039.[1]
History
General Kovachs, commanding a force comprised of the Eighth Donegal Guards and the mercenary First Dragonslayers and Gray Death Legion units, was tasked with capturing the Draconis Combine's Altais system during the War of 3039's first wave. Facing off against the First and Second Ghost regiments, Kovachs ordered the Gray Death Legion to capture the spaceports of Willas and New Ross while his Eighth Guards moved against the capital city of Gaines—with the Dragonslayers being kept in orbit as a reserve force. On 27 April, Kovachs further split his troops to have his second battalion draw the Second Ghost away from their headquarters while his first battalion dropped directly on the HQ, shattering the opposing unit's command structure. Unfortunately for Kovachs' plans, the yakuza soldiers of the Second Ghost proved fully capable of operating with little overall command and delayed the capture of Gaines by several weeks.[1]
In the meanwhile, the Gray Death Legion succeeded in their fight against the First Ghost by a thin margin, with Colonel Grayson Carlyle having to make a 150-kilometer forced march in order to relieve his besieged troops in New Ross. Upon hearing of the GDL's victory and their preparedness to continue fighting, Kovachs ordered the mercenaries to continue their pursuit of the First Ghost before calling in the Dragonslayers to aid in the capture of Gaines. By the time the fighting in Gaines concluded, both the Second Ghost and Kovachs' Eighth Guards had been significantly damaged, but the planetary government finally surrendered on 16 May. When the Second Ghost left Altais on 13 June—after having fought a determined guerrilla campaign against Kovachs' forces—Altais was officially secured by the soldiers of the Lyran Commonwealth.[1]
The Combine's counterattack never struck against Altais directly, but Kovachs received orders to retreat from his untenable position in late October regardless. The cramped convoy of Lyran JumpShips had to pass through numerous systems that had been occupied by enemy forces, with the worst losses occurring when an armor transport and two squadrons of fighters perished in the Tsukude system. By the time the Altais task force reached the safety of the Phalan system on 19 November, thousands of its soldiers were dead and Kovachs' career was so blighted by the loss that he would ultimately retire from military service in 3044.[2]
