It Ends in Fire is a short story by Alan Brundage that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel. It is about the death of Clan Nova Cat at the Battle of Irece (3142).
Plot Summary
Elemental Star Captain Horghuz had a meeting with Niko West, the Nova Cat's saKhan. West orders him to create a new unit, using solahma trainees and paramilitary police, to fight the oncoming Draconis Combine invasion as mobile reserve. He forms a Supernova with a motley collection of warriors, equipping them with whatever is available. On 29 December, the ground battle begins. Horguz's trinary began harassing the Combine forces. Fighting the Genyosha, Horguz killed a Combine MechWarrior before being redeployed to a bridge. After the trinary received an artillery barrage, they were forced to retreat. The next day, the Combine forces continue pressing, putting the Cats on the ropes. One of Horguz's subordinates tells him that he had a vision, and all will end in fire. After receiving a barrage, Horguz lost consciousness. He awoke a day later and saw a nuke falling on the top of the Cats Khan's formation. His last thoughts after seeing the detonation are that his man was right, and all ends in fire.
