Hohiro Tatsuma was the commanding officer of the Fifth Sword of Light as of 3040.[1]
History
During the War of 3039, Chu-sa Tatsuma commanded the Second Battalion of the Fifth Sword of Light, most notably serving in the liberation of Pike IV from the Lyran Commonwealth during the war's latter half. In late August 3039, Sho-sho Jonathan Fujimoto ordered Tatsuma to lead his battalion in a direct assault against the forces defending Pike IV's capital city, believing that the bravery and strength of the elite Sword soldiers would easily outweigh the Lyrans' numerical superiority. This proved not to be the case, with the ferocious defense put up by the Thirtieth Lyran Guards and Seventeenth Skye Rangers forcing Tatsuma to retreat and ultimately instigating a devastating Lyran counterattack that nearly cost the Fifth Sword victory on Pike. Following the close of the war, Sho-sho Fujimoto requested and received permission to commit seppuku in order to atone for the Fifth Sword's near-failure, with Tatsuma serving as his second during the ceremony before ascending to command of the Fifth Sword afterwards.[1]
By 3050, Tatsuma had been demoted to Sho-sa but continued to command the Fifth Sword's sole battalion on Dieron.[2] Following the Clan Invasion, Tatsuma retained command of the Fifth Sword and was stationed on Tanh Linh by 3054.[3] By 3059, Tatsuma still commanded the Fifth Sword on Tanh Linh.[4] With his unit having been reduced to only a battalion of green warriors, Tatsuma accepted that the Fifth sword had essentially become an entirely new unit and endeavored to judge his subordinates solely on their combat abilities and their loyalty to House Kurita. As a result of this decision, Tatsuma's Fifth Sword began to attract many of the Combine's most promising female warriors who would have otherwise been rejected based on traditional biases.[5]
Tatsuma held onto command of the Fifth Sword following the unit's participation in Operation BULLDOG, the First Combine-Dominion War, and the Federated Commonwealth Civil War and was stationed on Kaznejoy by 3067.[6]
