The Greenstone was a modified Danais-class DropShip in the service of the lost Department of Communications installation-turned-colony Taranaki Mountain on Tutanekai.

History

The Greenstone landed on Tutanekai in the Deep Periphery on 3 July 2766 along with five thousand workers and supplies and equipment to set up an installation and HPG. It would become trapped and isolated in the system alongside its crew and passengers when the JumpShip that had delivered them left, the workers discovered that crucial HPG parts were missing, and the Inner Sphere forgot their existence for over three centuries due to the events of the Amaris Civil War later that year and the following Succession Wars.[2]

Around a century after the landing, paranoid of potential pirate incursions in the Periphery and with little use for hauling cargo into space, Greenstone was heavily modified and fitted with hidden firepower, essentially turning her into a Q-Ship. Technicians outfitted her with eight Large lasers and ten Gauss rifles, as well as 120 LRM tubes hidden behind blow-away panels.[3]

The Jihad

By 3075, Greenstone would be Taranaki Mountain's sole spaceworthy DropShip. That year, a Word of Blake exploratory mission would arrive in the system, with a JumpShip undocking a pair of Overlord-class DropShips. Greenstone was sent up, with Admin Celia Xiao aboard, to gather information as well as welcome and meet with the new arrivals. After communications were established and a rendezvous was agreed upon with Precentor James Wilmarth aboard the lead DropShip Sword of Peace, the three vessels closed distance. Once the distance was reduced to within two kilometers, the Word of Blake vessels opened fire on the Greenstone, which in return revealed its hidden weaponry and returned fire. Focusing fire especially on the bridge of the Sword of Peace until contact was lost with Taranaki Mountain, the ensuing fate of both vessels is unknown, as the only one to later approach Tutanekai would be the second Overlord-class DropShip.[4]

Notes

  • ^ This is the date of the landing on Tutanekai and could be said to be when the Greenstone began its service to the administration of Taranaki Mountain specifically. History of the DropShip prior to this date is unknown.
