Edgar Grantham was the fist confirmed Scarecrow MechWarrior in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns during the Dark Age Era.[1]
History
When the Federated Suns first deployed the anti-infantry Scarecrow in 3140, numerous humanitarian groups criticized the AFFS for utilizing a machine whose purpose was to rapidly kill large numbers of infantrymen. Despite the official policy being to ignore such derision, Major Grantham was the first Scarecrow pilot to go on record in 3141 in defense of the BattleMech. Citing examples such as the Piranha, Stinger, and Locust, Grantham went on to ask "What difference does it make if a battalion of Louie infantry is killed by 200 Syrtis infantrymen or one 'Mech? Does it make it all right if the enemy is killed one at a time? Should we subject more of our sons and daughters to the murder of combat, or design weapons that lessen the cost on our own citizens?"[2][3]
When the Capellan Confederation captured Almach, Grantham narrowly avoided capture after single-handedly holding a kilometer of the FedSuns' defensive line against hostile infantry. Fighting alongside the other members of his company, Grantham was ultimately forced to withdraw when the Confederation fielded two Vindicators in response to his resistance efforts. While he had allowed numerous independent experts to examine him in order to confirm his sanity, the Interstellar Red Cross continued to push to have Grantham officially labeled as a war criminal. Fortunately for the MechWarrior, the AFFS consistently refused to recognize the Red Cross' accusations.[1]
