The title of this story is a reference to a Latin verse written by the classical Roman poet Horace: "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" (i.e. it is sweet and right to die for one's country). The phrase was popularized by the World War I poet Wilfred Owen, who wrote the anti-war poem Dulce et Decorum est, which ended with the line "My friend, you would not tell with such high zest; To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori".
