Divided Loyalties is a short story by Jim Rapkins that was first published as introductory fiction for Jihad Turning Points: Atreus.
Plot Summary
In 3076, Thomas Halas has launched a raid on Atreus to rescue his wife and survivors of the Knights of the Inner Sphere. During this battle, Force Commander Nikos Valcjek leads a battalion of the Second Free Worlds Legionnaires through Atreus City with the intention of attacking the enemy landing zone - but is told by his superior officer to stand down. In his place, the Fifteenth Division of the Word of Blake Militia will hit the landing zone, although they will need longer due to suburbs blocking the direct route. Valcjek quickly realizes he was wrong, when the WoB forces start breaking through the suburbs, killing thousands of civilians in the process. Valcjek, who witnesses the atrocity in horror, finally swears vengeance.
