REGIMENTAL OVERVIEW

The 7th Heavy Cavalry Regiment, known throughout the Federated Suns and beyond as the Cold Steel Cavalry, is a storied heavy combined-arms formation that has stood watch on the frozen frontier for nearly three centuries. Descended directly from Royal Star League Defense Force units, the regiment carries forward ancient Terran cavalry traditions — crossed sabers, gold branch colors, black Stetsons, and the legendary Spur Ride — while operating as a full Regimental Combat Team capable of independent long-range campaigns in the harshest environments.

Cold Steel Cavalry specializes in winter and high-altitude warfare, ridge-line armored breakthroughs, missile-dominant suppression, and glacier defense. Stationed at Fort Nathan Bedford Forrest beneath Mawreddog’s glaciers on New Syrtis, the regiment serves as one of the Capellan March’s premier guardians against Capellan incursions, Taurian raiders, and the ever-shifting threats of the ilClan era.

Unit Motto:

"Where the Cold Steel Cavalry rides, enemy lines break."

History

STAR LEAGUE ORIGINS

The regiment traces its unbroken lineage to the 7th Royal Heavy Cavalry Regiment of the Star League Defense Force. Formed from Terran cavalry traditions, the unit earned its reputation during Operation LIBERATION (2765–2767), where it repeatedly breached entrenched defensive arcologies across the Terran Hegemony, secured vital logistics corridors, and executed precision ridge assaults under extreme conditions. The regiment’s doctrine — heavy assault supported by overwhelming missile fire and rapid cavalry maneuver — was refined in the snows of New Earth, the highlands of Carver, and the final push into the Terran system itself.

Although the Amaris Civil War exacted a terrible toll, several irreplaceable Royal BattleMechs survived and remain treasured relics within the regiment’s vaults beneath Mawreddog.

THE REFUSAL & NEW SYRTIS GARRISON

In 2779, when General Aleksandr Kerensky issued the call for the Exodus, the surviving officers of the 7th Heavy Cavalry convened a solemn regimental council beneath the ruins of a Terran castle. Their decision was unanimous: they would not abandon the worlds they had sworn to protect. They would remain and serve humanity where it needed them most.

First Prince Paul Davion welcomed the veteran SLDF troops with open arms and granted them permanent garrison rights on the strategic frontier world of New Syrtis. The regiment took possession of an abandoned Star League Castle Brian buried deep beneath the glaciers of the Mawreddog continent and renamed it Fort Nathan Bedford Forrest — their home ever since. For 272 years the fortress has stood as the unbreakable anchor of the Cold Steel Cavalry, its cryo-hangars, sealed vaults, and avalanche kill-zones perfectly suited to the regiment’s winter doctrine.

From that moment the unit set aside its Royal designation and became known as the Cold Steel Cavalry — a name chosen to symbolize their unyielding resolve and the cold, unforgiving steel they would bring to any enemy who threatened the Inner Sphere.

SUCCESSION WARS

Throughout the Succession Wars the Cold Steel Cavalry served as the steel spine of the Capellan March frontier. They repelled countless Capellan raids, hunted Taurian-backed pirates through the old Aurigan Reach, and stood ready to defend key industrial worlds. Though many original Star League machines were lost in the brutal fighting, the regiment preserved its command traditions, aggressive cavalry doctrine, and the unbreakable bond forged in the Refusal.

AURIGAN RESTORATION WAR

In 3025 the regiment answered a covert request for assistance from the Aurigan Coalition during the restoration of High Lady Kamea Arano. Elements of Cold Steel Cavalry deployed to the Reach and fought with distinction in several critical engagements:

  • The Battle of Weldry (ice-world ambush)
  • The Smithon Ammunition Raid
  • The Battle of Panzyr
  • The decisive Battle of Coromodir

These operations not only helped restore House Arano but forged lasting diplomatic ties between the Federated Suns and the Aurigan Reach. Several Aurigan-salvaged ’Mechs and vehicles (including the Huron Warrior now serving in Raptor Lance) were incorporated into the regiment’s arsenal as tokens of that alliance.

CLAN INVASION – THE SHATTERING

During the Clan Invasion the regiment faced its greatest trial against raiding forces of Clan Ghost Bear. In one catastrophic engagement forever remembered as “The Shattering,” the Cold Steel Cavalry was nearly annihilated. Reduced to a single reinforced battalion, the survivors fought their way off the battlefield while capturing valuable Clan salvage — including the Marauder IIC and Stone Rhino that still serve today. The regiment withdrew to Mawreddog, licked its wounds in the depths of Fort Forrest, and began the long road to recovery.

JIHAD AND DARK AGE REORGANIZATION

During the Word of Blake Jihad the Cold Steel Cavalry once again anchored the Capellan March defenses. After the conflict the regiment was officially reorganized into a full Regiment:

  • 1st Battalion – Cold Steel (Heavy Assault)
  • 2nd Battalion – Black Horse (Line Combat)
  • 3rd Battalion – Iron Horse (Training & Replacement)

Supporting elements were expanded to include Tiger Armor Company (Patton MBTs), Ghost Troop mechanized infantry (Goblin IFVs), Long Tom artillery batteries, and Eagle Aerospace Squadron (Stingray, Mechbuster, H-7 Warrior VTOLs).

RESURGENCE ERA & CURRENT OPERATIONS

By the early 32nd century the Cold Steel Cavalry had regained its full strength. The regiment resumed aggressive frontier operations across the Capellan March, earning fresh laurels in:

  • The Battle of Kestrel’s Reach Ice Plain
  • The Siege of Blackglass Basin
  • Operation Iron Snow
  • The defense of Kincaid Ridge

These campaigns reaffirmed the regiment’s reputation as one of the most aggressive and reliable heavy cavalry formations in the Federated Suns.

Under Colonel Nathaniel Hunter (with Major Cole Hunter commanding 1st Battalion), the Cold Steel Cavalry stands ready on Mawreddog’s glaciers. With Alexander Hasek’s return and the fresh Taurian front, the regiment is once again the first line of defense for the Capellan March.

Traditions

THE COLD STEEL SPUR RIDE

One of the regiment’s most sacred traditions is the Cold Steel Spur Ride, a demanding rite of passage derived from ancient Terran cavalry customs. Every warrior — from cadet to veteran — must complete the Spur Ride before earning the right to wear the regimental black Stetson and silver spurs.

The trials include long-range glacier navigation, live-fire simulator duels, night reconnaissance in Frostpine Forest, emergency reactor drills, combined-arms exercises on Purgatory Glacier, and a final one-on-one combat simulation against a veteran of the regiment. Those who succeed are inducted into the Order of the Spur in a ceremony held within Fort Nathan Bedford Forrest. Silver spurs mark completion; gold spurs are awarded only for distinguished combat service.
