BattleMech Repair Facility
History
There is no standard 'Mech repair facility, but they have several things in common[1]:
- They are rarely intact having been the target of enemy forces during the Succession Wars.
- Most are leftovers from the Star League era.
- Their structural gridwork follows several patterns:
- The outer walls are used to pull BattleMechs into a standing position for repairs. The number of 'Mechs depends on the size of the installation.
- Landings and cranes ring the facility's outer walls to give Techs more mobility to work
- The internal buildings are mostly open areas with many cranes and winches for working on Mechs. This is the place where the heavily damaged 'Mechs are repaired
- An specific large building is used to store spare parts, separated in areas by type. Some bases even have a separate building for 'Mech parts stripped from other 'Mechs.
- There is a concrete blast area surrounded by high and thick walls for the special crew Techs that handle BattleMechs that might come carrying primed missiles or filled with unexploded ammunition. The most advanced facilities have robotic technicians that can handle this.
- Ammunition is usually stored in an underground facility with several blast-proof fire doors and located at least a kilometer from the repair base
- The quarters for the base personal and their families is located at some distance from the underground ammo storage. It is connected to the repair facility and other emergency exits.
- Some bases have specific buildings to store the base's transports.
- There is a barracks area several kilometers from the base for the MechWarriors assigned to protect the base.
- A few facilities still have an ultraadvanced COMCore computers (built in the last year of Star League). These computers are difficult to operate and impossible to repair, but when working they can coordinate 'Mech repair schedules and help pinpoint 'Mech's difficulties and hence cutting down on repair time.
The standard 'Mech repair facility is a well-coordinated and secure area containing the House's most precious parts and supplies.[1]
BattleMech Triage
When 'Mechs are brought to a facility, priority is the opposite of that for injured humans: the leasthurt 'Mech is repaired first as the faster a'Mech can be made active the sooner it will return to fight at the front.[1]
Defenses
These are the typical defenses of these bases[1]:
- The ones still intact are in well-protected areas, well fortified and protected by an AeroSpace Fighter base nearby and BattleMechs
- They have a tight security, with several platoons of infantry and support craft protecting it.
- On top of this, the damaged BattleMechs presented at the base for repairs serve as last line of defense.
