History

The First Buena Volunteers were a LCAF unit formed in the final years of the Dark Age.

Formation

On June 6, 3146, a portion of the still-forming Second Collective Guards were on Ayacucho, Diego Widmer's homeworld, when the Florida Timbuktu Theater Militia landed there. The two sides soon settled into a stalemate that lasted for several months, with the Collective Guards putting up surprising resistance.[1] By January 3148, however, anti-Widmer sentiment had grown amongst Ayacucho's public, and LCAF reinforcements had arrived under the command of Colonel John Nelson. Despite the surprise appearance of the mercenary Thunderstruck unit on the Collective's side, the Lyran forces soon triumphed and returned Ayacucho to Commonwealth rule.[2]

Following the unit's surrender, Nelson conducted a series of court martials against the remaining Guardsmen. In this process, Nelson discovered that many in the unit were conscripts, coerced into combat service despite their objections to Widmer's actions. Hauptmann-General Martha Steiner authorized Nelson to enlist Commonwealth-loyal volunteers as an auxiliary force. The resulting battalion was christened the First Buena Volunteers.[3]

Buena

The Volunteers were part of Task Force KINGBREAKER, the LCAF offensive against Buena. Both the First Bolan Jaegers and the Volunteers had requested the assignment of capturing the planetary capital of Ciudad del Mar, hoping to expunge the black mark on the honor of Buena soldiers. The Volunteers first made landfall on January 24, 3148, and proceeded to advance from the northern coast to the capital. The Volunteers faced their former comrades in the Second, who attempted to hold the attackers back with air and artillery strikes, but neither they nor the First Collective Guards were able to hold them back. Battlefield losses and general inexperience left the LCAF units openings to exploit. By January 30, the city's defenses had fallen. Members of the Volunteers stormed Widmer's command post and arrested him. Following their performance in the battle, key members of the Volunteers were awarded the Commonwealth Star and the unit was granted a higher place within the quartermaster's priority rankings.[4]
