The Eve of the War is a short story by Herbert A. Beas II that was published as introductory fiction for War of the Tripods.
Plot Summary
On 30 October 3138, ex-militiaman Ogilvy Wilmuth and his wife witness the landing of a mysterious spacecraft near their farm on Bryant. After informing the Bryant Citizens Militia of their observation, the Wilmuths head to the landing site, where they witness the descent of a giant metal "Tripod" from the alien spacecraft.
