Clyde Shipyards (alternatively referred to as Clyde Spaceyards[2]) was a facility within the Federated Suns in orbit over the planet Firgrove, located in the Periphery March.[1]
Overview
Originally the Clyde Shipyards were basic maintenance and repair yards for merchant shipping.[3] During and after the Jihad, Clyde Shipyards became much more important to the Federated Suns.[1] The shipyards began producing small quantities of the Colossus, the largest Assault DropShip to be constructed by the SLDF during the Star League era, with at least one such vessel (the Revenge) given to the Medusans mercenary unit as part-payment on the contract for their defense of the shipyards.[2] They began production of the Arondight class of DropShips to help take up the slack after the destruction of Galax and the production lines there. In 3079, Clyde announced that they would begin production of Union-class DropShips as well.[1] Unfortunately, Blakist sabotage kept production at the shipyards below maximum at least as late as mid-3081.[4]
While the Taurian Concordat was not out of the fight, the planet of Firgrove, home of the Clyde Shipyards was unnervingly close to the Word of Blake forces. With the initial wave of construction plans at Galax, pocket warships and dropships were not present. With AFFS and MIIO approval, Clyde Shipyards and Challenge Systems formed a strategic partnership and began working together to add the Colossus and Arondight to the construction queues closer to New Avalon.
To keep with Julian Davion's agreement with Protector Kaff Doru this world became a key component in repair, refit, and even new ships sold to the Taurian Concordat. The 6th Periphery Guard received additional aerospace support from both the AFFS and Taurian Concordat to help secure the facility. It is also worth noting that the administration of the Clyde Shipyards made very public advertisements showing their support of the struggling Taurian forces and helping to even house Taurians that needed shelter farther away from the fighting. Stock prices skyrocketed as employment reached unthinkable levels and production rates surged.[5]
