Blake's Gate

“We don’t have much farther!” shouted an Adept.

“Keep pushing through the field!”  The Captain responded.  Normally the Precentor would be on deck as well but, he was in the cargo deck.

The cargo deck was filled with gear and equipment, likely to never be used.  However, those faithful to Blake knew the risks.  The pylon was set and ready to deploy.  As this was the sole remaining objective for his column of dropships, he wanted to ensure it was complete.

“Precentor, this is the Captain, we are passing through the final asteroids now.  Our two fighters are shielding us.  We have just minutes, it appears there are inbound fighters from the planet.”

“Affirmative, Captain, keep us alive as long as you can, you have command for now.”

“Yes, Precentor, out.”

He turned to look at the pylon.  A seemingly simple device but something entirely new. Bringing up a holopanel to show the external ships and debris he determined the perfect location to place the pylon.

He secured the tube, two Adepts bowed their heads and began chanting quietly nearby.  Then with a press of a button, the pitch black pylon slid out and into space, a small set of thrusters angling and pushing it to the designated location.

Just a couple dozen meters away, the pylon seemed to go invisible against the blackness of space.  He could look through a small porthole out into space at this location, which he hoped he could see what would happen.

Seconds ticked by, he could hear rumbling through the single dropship that made it out of the asteroid field.  Soon lasers began flashing by the side of the vessel.  He ignored them and continued to watch out in space.

“Precentor! To a life boat!” shouted the Captain on the overhead system.

Even then, he ignored it, just watching. There was no way he would get a chance to fight another day.

“All systems critical, life support failing all decks!” shouted the Captain overhead.  Multiple Taurian fighters flew by the porthole.

He continued to watch, then a large flash, like a hole torn through space.  A star filled view turned black for kilometers of space. Finally, the rumbling behind him reached a roar as the glow of flames surrounded the Precentor. He closed his eyes as he could feel the heat.  The dropship exploded.
