''[[Tai-i]]'' Karoda, serving with the Fourteenth Sun Zhang Cadre, was stationed on [[Wolcott]] in 3059. A fifth-generation samurai and the third member of his family to graduate from the [[Sun Zhang Academy]], Karoda's superiority in simulated battles infuriated the prior commander of the Second Battalion's Third Company and lead his superior officer to personally insult Karoda's family lineage. Karoda subsequently earned command of the Third Company after receiving permission from Fourteenth Cadre commander ''[[Tai-sa]]'' [[Susuma Goshiki]] to duel his detractor, killing his opponent and taking his position within the unit.
