As the fighting on Giausar wrapped up, though, heavy fighting broke out on the theater headquarters world of [[Cavanaugh II]]. Publicly, Richard had been presenting himself as apolitical, telling the commander of the [[10th Lyran Regulars]] he was committed to serving the Alliance by protecting the border rather than get embroiled in a family squabble. Privately, however, Richard saw the pro-Victor Tenth Regulars as a threat to be destroyed and asked [[Nondi Steiner|his mother]] for additional troops. Nondi refused her son's request, forcing him to seek support on his own. Richard managed to win over the [[7th Lyran Regulars]] and [[1st Bolan Jaegers]], and concealed the incoming units until they were right on top of the Regulars. He then chose to antagonize the local [[Com Guard]] division, pushing them into aligning with the Tenth against him.<ref>''FedCom Civil War'', pp. 144–145</ref>

Throughout 3066, Richard Steiner's position on his headquarters world eroded, largely due to his own attempts to micromanage his forces. When the commander of the 7th Regulars fell in combat and his successor advocated coming to terms with the Allies, Richard accused her of treason and executed her. Rather than serve as a lesson to those unwilling to fight, defections (something Richard's forces were already struggling to contain) surged in number, leaving them sorely outmatched.<ref>''FedCom Civil War'', pp. 162, 174</ref> In February 3067, the Allies made their last push to Richard Steiner's command bunker. Despite their Margrave's orders to fight to the last, most of the remaining Loyalists began to lay down their arms, leaving only Richard's personal bodyguards and automated defenses.
