[[Lieutenant Colonel]] Melendez inherited her aerospace fighter from her [[Sergio Melendez|father]], who piloted the machine in combat against the [[Capellan Confederation]] during the fighting for [[Ipswich]] in the [[Victoria War]]. Melendez also built her reputation as an ace pilot in combat against the Confederation, shooting down an entire [[Wing (Formation)|wing]]'s worth of Capellan aerospace craft between [[3139]] and [[3145]]. This earned her the ire of the [[Capellan Confederation Armed Forces]] and standing orders were put in place making her the primary target of any Capellan pilots who happened to encounter her during combat operations.<ref name=45FWLp44/>
