==History==
===Rochester===
In [[3144]], during the Combine's invasion of the [[Federated Suns]] following the [[Palmyra Disaster]], Hayashi participated in the invasion of [[Rochester]]. During the Fifth Ghost's landing, Hayashi's unit lost half its conventional [[Regiments]], when their [[DropShip]]s were shot down by the Rochester militia's [[aerospace fighters]]. Blaming his fighter wing commander for conducting ground attacks instead of providing air support as ordered,   Hayashi had them publicly executed after the end of the campaign, making clear to his troops no such disobedience would be tolerated.  

In response, his [[Yakuza]] troops attempted five different times to assassinate Hayashi, though they were not successful. His approach was however popular with the ''[[Gunji no Kanrei]]'', and he slowly reduced opposition to his command in the Fifth Ghost by using his detractors as canon fodder in constant attacks against the [[Armed Forces of the Federated Suns]], suffering nearly fifty percent losses to his [[BattleMech]] regiment as a result.<ref name=FM3145p60>''Field Manual: 3145'', p. 60</ref>

===Franklin===
By December [[3145]], Hayashi and the Fifth Ghost, were based on [[Franklin]].<ref name=FM3145></ref> Still on Franklin in June 3147, Hayashi faced a [[Battle of Franklin (3147)|raid]] by the [[First Davion Guards]], [[First Kestrel Grenadiers]] and [[First Avalon Hussars]]. Attempting to meet the AFFS units in open battle, the Guards instead conducting running skirmishes, as the Grenadiers and Hussars resupplied local resistance cells before withdrawing.

With their new supplies, the Franklin resistance targeted Hayashi for assassination, but only managed to kill his Executive Officer. Shifting his focus to the resistance he had previously ignored as ineffective, Hayashi used all his Yakuza resources to locate their primary headquarters. Once this was found, he tasked a [[Battalion]] to destroy the rebels, which they did together with most of the supplies provided by the AFFS. The collateral damage to several city blocks caused by the raid however spawned a new resistance movement, reducing the gains from the engagement.<ref name=SFp32></ref>
