Takara ("treasure") was a geisha known as "Little Dragon" in the Draconis Combine. She had a child with Patrick Kell.
History
Around the time of the Kell Hounds' attack on Murchison in 3014[3] Takara resided in the Akumashima ("Devil's Island") slum of Hakkinshi on Murchison in a luxurious hidden apartment, adorned with hand-woven rugs from the Muslim-dominated Azami worlds, and with a balcony overlooking the Chilsai river. There, she acted as a caretaker for the untouchables living in the slum, and as the "Little Dragon" had achieved a truce with the local yakuza. According to Harrison Ukita, she previously belonged to one Marquis Jiro Somo (of Tanadi Computers) who had died four years ago.[2]
When Patrick Kell returned to Murchison six weeks after his unit's retreat, he sought her out ostensibly to find the pregnant paramour of another Kell Hounds member who had since died on Mallory's World. Kell actually expected her to betray him to the ISF because he wanted to be imprisoned as part of his true agenda on Murchison, but she did not. They ultimately still ended up in the prison and escaped together, and took part in the Kell Hounds' intricate plan to recover parts of the invaluable books recovered from Halstead Station earlier and steal a Draconis Combine DropShip in the process. They enjoyed a brief relationship afterwards, but Takara ultimately rejected Patrick Kell's offer to take her with him when the Kell Hounds left, because she felt Akumashima needed the Little Dragon. (However, over the course of the events she had lost her sanctuary apartment and had essentially burned her bridges with the yakuza so would not be able to return to her previous life.)
Nothing further about Takara has been published, but she and Patrick Kell had a child who was born in ca. 3026.[4]
Notes
- Takara first appeared in the short story The Judas Blind (in the Shrapnel anthology), where she is described as wearing "the uniform of a Davion aerojock" and wearing a squarish renketsu gold link on the back of her nose. The accompanying image had previously been published in the House Davion (The Federated Suns) sourcebook (p. 96).
